Meppeler ballroom dancers to the World Cup: ‘Too much effort is the pitfall’

Going to the World Cup on behalf of the Netherlands makes the Meppeler proud. “It has always been a dream for me to represent the Netherlands at a World Cup. That is great,” said Veenbrink. But there is one pitfall for the couple: “Over-perfoming”, says Veenbrink’s dance partner Kristina Møller. “Sometimes we want too much. Trying too much is our pitfall, because that’s when it becomes less flexible and beautiful.”

Veenbrink creates a smile. “Kristina keeps it tidy and talks about ‘we’, but I think I’m the one who wants too much. I’ve lost more matches because I tried too hard.”

Veenbrink got to know his dance partner via the internet. “It’s not easy to find someone with the same ambitions,” he says. He found a like-minded person in the Danish dancer. “I live in Germany, where I work five days a week for an international IT company,” says Møller, who drives a lot of miles to train with Veenbrink five days a week in Meppel.

More than a beautiful dance couple emerged on the dance floor, a spark flew. “We have also been a couple privately for two years now,” says Møller with satisfaction. But is it extra fun to go to a World Cup as a couple? Laughing in unison: “Not always. We are very happy that we can share the passion. But it’s not always roses and moonshine. That’s what it looks like on the dance floor. You also have to be realistic that it’s not always behind the scenes is the case. But that is also part of the sport at this level.”
