The fact that the new park is going to be built doesn’t even have much to do with the extra challenges. It is mainly because the current skate park no longer meets the requirements. The asphalt and the attributes are worn out. That makes the park dangerous, according to the skaters. And the park is also often used by loitering youth, which in turn leads to nuisance. With the new park, which will be made of concrete, all this should be a thing of the past.
The fact that there will be a new skate park is the result of a successful citizens’ initiative. The city council agreed with the plans and invested about 77,000 euros in it. The association itself has collected 72,500 euros from various funds for the plans.
At about the same time as this citizens’ initiative, there was also another citizens’ initiative. Two teenagers managed to realize a pump track track in the Oosterboer district. It opened at the end of last year and has been popular ever since. “We don’t expect it to be as busy as it is there,” Binie responds. “A pump track track is a bit more accessible to everyone. It would probably be a bit busier with the new track here, but I don’t think the parking spaces here will suddenly become full.”
Before the new park comes, the old must first be demolished. The association will take care of that. “And then we will see what we can do with the stuff. Whether it fits in another park, or whether we have to take it away for the waste.”
Binie expects the construction of the park to take about six weeks.
