The station at Meppel will be expanded. Not only will there be an additional platform, there will also be additional bicycle sheds on both sides of the station. This involves a total of three hundred parking spaces for bicycles.
In total, the station has just over 1,500 places to park bicycles. It turns out not to be enough, because the parking facilities are often full. Bearing in mind that Meppel wants to grow, the municipality has created a design together with ProRail to expand the bicycle sheds.
This concerns a total of three hundred extra places, spread over two stables. On the center side, the surface area of the parking facility remains the same, but additional places will be added on top of the existing parking facilities. Most places will be added on the other side of the station. The space is also being expanded there.
The intention is for work to start in the second or third quarter of the year.
However, the station at Meppel is awaiting a bigger change. This adds a platform. This is part of a package of measures to solve the problems on the railway between Zwolle and Meppel. On average, there are nine hours of disruptions on this route every week. Then all train traffic to and from the North will immediately come to a standstill. A majority in the House of Representatives agreed this week to release 75 million euros to solve these problems.
