Meppel is investigating whether the standard for poverty regulations can be relaxed

According to Statistics Netherlands, just under 6 percent of all households in Meppel live in poverty. About 5 percent of children in Meppel grow up in poverty. This corresponds to approximately 300 children, of whom approximately 100 are under the age of four. Just over six percent of households in Meppel are struggling with problematic debts.

Every year, the municipality expects that 1,200 signals of payment arrears will be received from residential landlords, drinking water companies, energy suppliers and health insurers.

These are figures from 2021. Statistics Netherlands does not yet have more recent figures.
