“Mental must change”: Governor Decaluwé wants to reduce the number of accidents
“It is absolutely not going well. We are directly at the level of before Corona. We are now immediately at 40 fatalities in traffic accidents in West Flanders.” The annual figures have almost doubled, and we are only September: enough is enough for Governor Decaluwé. He and Flemish minister Lydia Peeters are on edge. They have recently been analyzing all fatal accidents in West Flanders in detail.
“Sometimes it has to do with the infrastructure. But important to emphasize: a large part of our accidents is due to the mentality of the people. We see that speed is a very important cause of accidents. More and more cyclists are also involved. “
Stricter approach
Traffic experts, road authorities, enforcers and VIAS consult with the governor and the minister. There is already a lot of awareness, flash and tinkering with infrastructure. The governor is now outright pleading for a driver’s license with points, expansion of zone 30 and stricter enforcement with even more section control cameras.
