Menswear trends for SS23: The denim comeback

For the spring/summer 2023 season, men’s fashion relied heavily on denim. It included a variety of products in a wide variety of styles, including jackets, shirts and, of course, jeans. FashionUnited has rounded up the top ten looks from the London, Milan and Paris catwalk shows.

Marcelo Burlon County Of Milan

This was Marcelo Burlon’s tenth anniversary show. Walking to a techno beat, the models wore an eclectic mix of styles, including patched suits and fringed sportswear. There was also a lot of denim to see. Looks 15, 16 and 17 featured a unique light colored washed denim covered with even lighter colored frayed denim patches.

Craig Green

Between the utilitywear and the gorpcore looks in shades of light blue and whimsical accents at Craig Green, there were also two double denim looks on display. Look 18 consisted of a reduced ensemble of a sleeveless tank top and loose-fitting jeans. The top featured a patch pocket with an oversized eyelet.

Dolce & Gabbana

For their S/S23 collection, designer duo Dolce & Gabbana delved into their extensive archive, reviving looks from the late 1990s and early 2000s. Several looks paid homage to her longtime menswear muse, David Beckham. Among the various looks were several featuring oversized jeans. Look 39, for example, consisted of a relaxed fit, stonewashed jeans with rips and patches teamed with a logo t-shirt and belt, untied sneakers, motocross gloves and rosary beads: Italo-chic straight from the noughties.

Inspired by 1970s surf culture and Jamaican style, Dean and Dan Caten’s S/S23 collection for DSquared2 is a collaboration with the Bob Marley Foundation. Look 18 consisted of a patchwork sleeveless vest and slouchy jeans over a polo collar in Rastafari-inspired colors.

Givenchy

Creative director Matthew Williams presented a logo-heavy collection of sportswear and streetwear with lots of denim for Givenchy. Look 7 featured a pair of slouchy jeans with patch pockets paired with a plain white t-shirt and a branded headband-balaclava combo.

JW Anderson

JW Anderson’s spring/summer 23 collection included numerous silhouettes in denim in different variations, from dark to light to washed and distressed. Look 1 featured double dropped jeans – a cut used last season – paired with a red striped long sleeve t-shirt.

For their S/S23 men’s collection, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons presented numerous looks, from suits to leather trousers, mixed with striped sweaters and checked coats. Looks 31 to 34 consisted of washed-out denim-on-denim outfits: straight-leg jeans or shorts paired with cuffed ‘shackets’.

Bianca Saunders

British-Jamaican designer Bianca Saunders presented the kind of fluid and minimalist tailoring she became known for in Paris. Look 3 was an all-over jeans outfit: a denim blouson combined with jeans with twisted seams.

Y/Project

Glenn Martens’ collection for Y/Project was generally denim-heavy, with many playful nods to tradition that have become his signature style. In Look 5 he wore medium wash denim with a long sleeve t-shirt printed with a belted denim waistband, a trompe l’oeil effect he is famous for.

The Japanese designer Takuya Morikawa presented his collection under the name Taakk for the second time at the Paris Fashion Week. For Look 7, the designer featured a western-style shirt and jeans made from torn and frayed light-colored denim.
