Menstrual cycle: leave arrives in a French company

Un French furniture factory he started a one-year trial: will allow its employees to take advantage of one day of paid rest per month in the most painful moments of the menstrual cycle. This stance is causing discussion. And it is not the only European country to want to deal with this issue.

Menstrual cycle and work: the decision of the Louis company

Louis is a furniture factory in Labège, near Toulouse. Since last March 8 it is one of the first companies to guarantee its employees this leave not yet codified in labor law. This is a one-year measure (still in an experimental phase) that it involves the eight female employees (there are nine men).

Why this decision? She explained it to France Bleu the general manager of the company, Thomas Devineaux: «Employees must not produce no medical certificate and there is no need for permissions. In case of painful periods just inform the manager“.

And again: «So we work in a climate of flexibility and we avoid unexpected events during production. It is important that they exist in the workplace trust and well-being. By doing so, we hope to encourage other companies to follow our example ».

The debate in Spain: three to five days off

But there is not only France. In fact, in recent weeks in Spain a new bill on abortion is being discussed (would allow to terminate the pregnancy starting from sixteen without parental permission).

Within this proposal (strongly supported by the left party Podemos) was put an article right on menstrual leave.

The Government is therefore evaluating the possibility of introduce three to five day work permits for those who suffer from “disabling pains” during their menstrual cycle.

The situation in Italy? It takes us back to 2016

In our country the only proposal on the subject is stops in 2016. In fact, in that year, some deputies of the Democratic Party presented to the Chamber a bill for the establishment of a leave (of maximum three days per month) for women suffering from dysmennorea.
