Men’s ski jumping in Wisla: Wellinger’s sensational jump is not enough for team success

As of: January 13, 2024 5:51 p.m

Despite a fantastic first jump from Andreas Wellinger, who shattered the hill record in Wisla, Poland, it was not enough for the DSV Adler to achieve team success. Slovenia won the super team event on Saturday (January 13th, 2024) ahead of Austria, the Germans came third.

Wellinger was at the start together with Stephan Miete, but he jumped too weakly to be at the front. In the end, the Slovenians got 753.5 points, Team Austria was just ahead of the DSV (709) with 711 points.

“The mood is a bit mixed”

National coach Stefan Horngacher admitted on ZDF: “The mood is a bit mixed. Andy didn’t quite grab the take-off table on his second jump, Stephan had difficult conditions and fell a bit short. Slovenia was very far away today, but we could have beaten Austria.”

After his first jump to a sensational 144.5 meters, with which he literally pulverized the hill record set by the Slovenian Anze Lanisek (137.5 meters), which had just been set in front of him, Wellinger said: “Yes, it was pretty nice. The goal now is not to jump any further, 139 meters with a clean telemark would be great. But now I have to get the adrenaline out somehow and then we want to attack again.”

National coach Stefan Horngacher added: “Andy can do jumps like that, so everything was perfect. But you don’t have to go any further than that, then it will hurt at some point.”
