The planned Leie works in Menen itself are on hold for the time being. A local resident has challenged the permit, which means the procedure is still ongoing. The impact of these works on traffic, trade and vacancy in the Barracks would be significant. Alderman of Leiewerken Mieke Syssauw remains hopeful: “We hope that we can complete this next year with a favorable outcome, so that the works can start immediately.”
To limit traffic disruption, the city is spreading other construction sites over time. For this purpose, 8 million euros has been provided for environmental works. “The Grote Markt, for example, was a project that we wanted to do during this legislature, but to prevent one from having an impact on the other, we have to postpone it in time,” says Roose.
