Despite the disappointing elimination at the World Cup in Qatar, Memphis Depay is proud of the Dutch national team. “We really had the feeling that special things could happen here. Unfortunately, that did not work out.”
“This is sour. It was a tough match”, Depay looks back. ,,You are 2-0 down and somehow fight your way back into the game. We all knew there were multiple ways. But then it becomes penalties and you know it came in all directions.”
Depay himself was substituted in the 78th minute by national coach Louis van Gaal. His replacement was Wout Weghorst, the man who still managed to drag out an extension with goals in the 83rd and 101st minutes. “There was even more tension from the side. We all really believed in it. That says a lot about the belief we have in each other, this is a fantastic team.”

Soon afterwards the discussion flared up again, whether you can train to take penalty kicks with so much pressure. “I don’t know, I’m not a scientist. We did our best and prepared ourselves as well as possible. But there is always one winner. I can’t believe we’re going out on penalties against Argentina again, I can’t put my finger on it. It also happens in other countries, but eight years later it is sour.”
“It turns out how it turned out and that’s fate. You try to comfort everyone and are just proud of those guys, including those guys who took the responsibility to take a penalty. We can build on this further. But it’s a pity, because we really had the feeling that special things could happen here. Unfortunately, that did not work out.”
