M.EMORY BOX
Type: Historical-intimate ✦✦✦
Direction: Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige. With Rim Turki, Manal Issa, Paloma Vauthier, Clémence Sabbagh
Artists (sculptures, installations, performances) and filmmakers (oscillating between documentary and fiction), Hadjithomas and Joreige had made themselves known with Je voix voir (2008) in which Catherine Deneuve went to discover their country, Lebanon, of which she knew nothing.
With this film, presented at the last Berlinale, the couple tries to respond to the young protagonist’s request: “I want to know”.
Thirty years after the end of the civil war, Maia, who in the meantime has moved to Canada, has her memories of that period – letters, cassettes, photos – delivered in a box.
Too painful for her, but a source of curiosity for her daughter who knows nothing about her mother’s homeland and her adolescent life in Beirut – between fear and desire.
The box contains the true correspondence between Hadjithomase an exiled friend. An exciting film.
