Melissa looks back on her wedding and feels ‘reborn’

It’s two days after the wedding of Melissa and Carin from Den Helder. The couple married again on Monday after 19 years, but now Carin married Melissa and not Marco. She went into transition and Carin stayed with her. They wanted to show their love for each other again by getting married for the second time. Melissa looks back on a very successful day at NH Nieuws. “I feel reborn.”

Two days after the wedding, Melissa is still very impressed by the amount of people who attended the ceremony and the party. “There were an awful lot of people, we really did not expect that.”

Although the couple lost many friends through Melissa’s transition, “true friends” all came along. “People who had read the newspaper article about our marriage, volunteers from the animal ambulance (where the couple works as a volunteer, ed.) and many people from the mop bands I play with.” Although 80 invitations had been sent out, at one point, according to Melissa, there were 150 friends and acquaintances at the party.

Facebook comments

Once home, the couple also receives many messages online. This morning Melissa took the time to read all the comments under the Facebook message with the report from NH News. There are now more than 180. “I have responded to everything with a thumbs up, except for the negative reactions.”

Because unfortunately they were among them. “I did respond to that, not with nasty words, but I do try to explain a thing or two about my situation. Maybe I shouldn’t go into it, but it’s also a way to let it go afterwards. to let go.”

Unfortunately, Melissa is used to this kind of reaction and even had to hear it from friends. “At first it made me very emotional. Now I can let it slide off me a little easier.” The reactions on Facebook still touch her, “but I also understand that people have to get used to it.”

Always been a woman

As a result of all the media attention, Melissa also received a message from a surprising angle. She delivers packages for her work and one of the people she regularly visits had also seen the report. “She had never noticed before that I was in transition. She always thought I was a woman,” Melissa says happily.

She doesn’t regret all the attention. “It’s good for myself, I can and want to talk about it. But I also do it for other people who might face the same choice. Maybe I can help them with something in this way.”
