Mega maintenance on Zwanenburgbaan Schiphol, residents of Buitenveldertbaan are out of action for half a year

Next year, Schiphol will carry out major maintenance on the Zwanenburgbaan, one of the airport’s six runways. The provisional schedule states that the runway will be virtually closed to air traffic between 2 January and the end of June. As a result, it is expected that especially those living near the Buitenveldertbaan will have to suffer for six months.

Schiphol expects the first part of the major maintenance to last until mid-April 2023. Work on Zwanenburgbaan will then focus on renewing the runway’s landing system for months, until the end of June. Despite the reservation of all data, Schiphol assumes that the Zwanenburgbaan will be little used in the first half of next year.

Due to the long closure, air traffic that normally takes off and lands on the Zwanenburg runway has to be diverted to the other runways at Schiphol. A large part of this will be borne by the Buitenveldertbaan. The approach route of that runway includes ‘t Gooi, Amsterdam-Zuidoost, Amsterdam-Buitenveldert and Amstelveen.

Residents of those areas will probably notice the most of the consequences of the maintenance of the Zwanenburgbaan. The Aalsmeerbaan and Oostbaan will be used more often. When the maintenance schedule is final, Schiphol will announce which runways will be in use more often.

extra job

The Polderbaan and Kaagbaan are Schiphol’s preferred runways. Aircraft take off and land most often on those two runways, but usually an extra runway is used because of the large amount of air traffic at Schiphol.

Residents near the Buitenveldertbaan and Oostbaan will get a taste of more air traffic next week. The Zwanenburgbaan will also be serviced between 26 September and 2 October.
