Meerkat Houdini escapes a big surprise at home

After a week, the keepers of animal park De Oliemeulen in Tilburg finally managed to catch the escaped meerkat Houdini. The animal ran around outside the gates of the zoo after its escape and was difficult to catch, but on Wednesday afternoon it worked. When he returned, a big surprise awaited him.

Last week zookeeper Martijn went out with the bicycle and a landing net to get Houdini off the street, but the animal was always too fast for him. Wednesday Martijn got a tip and it worked.

Houdini, so named because he is the most adventurous meerkat in De Oliemeulen, is safe at home again. And that’s not the only good news: during his wild adventure outside the gates of the zoo, he also became a father.

Houdini’s caretakers were not much concerned. “As long as we know that he is nearby, we trust that we can catch him”, caretaker Martijn van Heijst said earlier. “In principle we can catch him with a landing net. And it is an insect eater, so he can take care of his own living.”
