At the World Championships in Athletics in Eugene, America, Anouk Vetter won a silver medal in the all-around. The Amsterdam athlete was in the lead after six of the seven parts, but lost it to the Belgian Nafi Thiam in the closing 800 meters.
Vetter was allowed to lose only 1.36 seconds compared to Thiam on the closing distance. The Belgian was in the end no less than seven seconds earlier than the 29-year-old Vetter. “I certainly thought for a while that it was possible, that it was possible. But I quickly let that thought go. I am unlucky that the 800 meters is my worst part,” said Vetter after winning the silver.
Dutch record
After gold at the European Championships in 2016 and silver at the Tokyo 2020 Games, this is Vetter’s next medal at a major final tournament. In addition, Vetter broke her own Dutch record by finishing the heptathlon with 6867 points. The bronze went to the American Anna Hall.
The World Athletics Championships have been successful for North Holland to date. This is how Jessica Schilder from Volendam won bronze in shot put and Lieke Klaver ran to a new Dutch record at 400 meters.
