Medvedev wins first game as number one

Indian Wells (AP) – Daniil Medvedev has won his first tennis match as number one in the world rankings and has moved into the third round of the Masters in Indian Wells.

Playing as a neutral due to the war in Ukraine, the Russian defeated Czech Tomas Machac 6-3, 6-2. The 26-year-old had replaced Novak Djokovic at the top at the end of February and is the 27th professional to have claimed the spot at the top since the rankings were launched.

In the hard court tournament, which is worth around 8.6 million US dollars, Medvedev is number one and had a bye in the first round like number three Olympic champion Alexander Zverev.
