Miami (AP) – Daniil Medvedev clearly won the duel between two former tennis world number ones against Andy Murray at the tournament in Miami.
The top seeded Russian won 6: 4, 6: 2 against the 34-year-old Scot, who can no longer match his former form after long injury breaks. After a bye at the start, Medvedev is now in the third round thanks to the smooth victory in Florida.
The 26-year-old replaced Novak Djokovic at the top of the world rankings just a few weeks ago. Due to the early end at the tournament in Indian Wells, Medvedev immediately lost the top position again. Should he reach the semifinals in Miami, he would return to first place, which Djokovic now occupies again. The Serb could not start in the two major hard court tournaments in the USA due to his lack of vaccination against the corona virus.
Medvedev is number one on the seed list in Miami ahead of Alexander Zverev. The Hamburger meets the American Mackenzie McDonald in the third round on Monday night.
