Medieval remains found during excavations in Kortrijk
The workers’ houses of the Amsterdampoortje themselves date from the 19th century and were partly demolished. During excavations, walls and floors of a 17th-century house came to light. Traces of an oven indicate that a metal worker later lived there.
Full Excavation
After further excavations, remains of walls dating back to the 14th century were also found. They were built on an even older canal, possibly from the 13th century. These finds point to habitation from the late Middle Ages.
It is suspected that parts of a residential area dating from the 14th century would be present. It was therefore decided to excavate the entire site. Archaeologists from Monument Vandekerckhove have been working on the site since the beginning of this month. The excavations will be completed in the course of next week, after which the archaeologists will prepare a report with their findings.
