The mediation committee of the Bundestag and Bundesrat has cleared the way for the introduction of citizen income. This was announced by the members of the mediation committee on Wednesday evening in Berlin.

Citizens’ income is to be introduced on January 1, 2023 and will replace Hartz IV benefits. This increases the standard rate for an adult by around 50 euros per month.

The Union has managed to ensure that sanctions can still be imposed from the outset on unemployed people who violate their duty to cooperate.

The mediation committee approved the compromise that had been worked out over the past few days by the coalition parties SPD, FDP and Greens, as well as the Union and representatives of the federal states. The Bundestag and Bundesrat still have to approve the amended law.

► In the future, the job centers should primarily ensure better opportunities for the unemployed by promoting further training or the catching up of professional qualifications.

► The initial waiting period, during which savings of up to 40,000 euros are spared, is one year.

► The additional income opportunities are improved.

► Apprentices and students from families who receive the citizen’s income will be able to keep significantly more of the money they have earned than before in the Hartz IV system.

The mediation process had become necessary because the Union had stopped the law of the traffic light coalition in the Bundesrat.
