Media: Union Berlin boss wanted to keep Urs Fischer

After more than five years of extremely successful sports, coach Urs Fischer and 1. FC Union Berlin parted ways in mid-November. Previously, the Iron Men had been unable to win a whopping 14 competitive games in a row – and even lost 13 of the games. Now surprising details about Fischer’s departure from the capital are coming to light.

Despite the sporting decline under Urs Fischer in the current season, the management of 1. FC Union Berlin would have allegedly given the Swiss even more chances. This is what “Sport Bild” reports.

Accordingly, President Dirk Zingler originally wanted to “promise full support” to the 57-year-old in the conversation that ultimately set the course for a separation. However, Fischer himself then explained the measures he had already tried in vain to turn things around and came to the conclusion that a new face in the coaching bench could inspire his protégés.

“The last few weeks have taken a lot of energy. We tried a lot, the team put in a lot, but it didn’t pay off in results. I’m very grateful for the trust that I felt here at all times. Nevertheless, it feels right when a change happens now: “Sometimes a different face, a different way of addressing a team helps to trigger a development,” emphasized Fischer when he officially announced his departure.

Will Urs Fischer return to the Bundesliga?

Incidentally, according to the report, Fischer’s contract in the capital will continue until the summer of 2025 with unchanged salaries. Theoretically, the Swiss could continue to receive a maximum of three million euros annually.

The sports magazine also reveals that Fischer will not jump straight into the next adventure, but will first take a break.

The position of Swiss national coach, for which Fischer was already traded after the 2024 European Championship, should not be the goal of the Zurich-born trainer. Fischer sees himself “as a club coach” and does not rule out renewed involvement in the German Bundesliga, according to the report.
