Media: Reus extension at BVB on the brink

After a disappointing season, BVB is about to make a change next summer. In addition to acute personnel issues, medium-term issues are also being discussed. In this context, the future of captain Marco Reus comes into focus.

Reus’ current contract in Dortmund runs until the summer of 2023. The question of whether the captain’s working paper should be extended ahead of schedule is apparently being hotly debated in the executive suite. However, the bosses have not yet come to a clear answer.

So far there have been no talks with Reus, nor are they specifically planned, reports “Sport Bild”. It is also clear that BVB will only extend the working paper with its captain to “strongly performance-related salaries”, “if at all”, the newspaper speculates that Dortmund could even let their captain’s contract expire.

Reus himself had recently emphasized that he would like to extend his working paper with the black and yellow. “I’ve already extended my contract twice, especially at times when things weren’t going particularly well in sport. So why shouldn’t I do it now?” he told “Bild am Sonntag”. The 32-year-old explained that he would like to end his career in Dortmund.

Criticism of Reus is getting louder

At the same time, criticism of his performance has become louder in recent weeks. Reus fights with himself and has no consistency, accused him of record national player Lothar Matthäus, among others. “And players like that should then lead the team? Very difficult,” the TV expert questioned Reus’ role.

And ex-Bundesliga coach Felix Magath publicly counted on Reus and wondered about his reputation as a “top player”.

“I don’t see that Marco Reus was once the one who won a championship like Lewandowski. For me, a top man has to deliver top performances. And that means delivering performances when it really counts,” said Magath.
