The president of the Unicaja Foundation, Braulio Medell, has announced this Thursday in a letter, to which Europa Press has had access, that it will resign from the Presidency of the entity in “a short period of time that allows, with the mind set solely on the interest of the Banking Foundation, a transition ordered”.

The manager thus advances his departure from the Presidency of the Foundationwhich was scheduled for autumn, when his term expired.

Medel has attributed his decision to several reasons: the report sent from the Protectorate of Banking Foundations, dependent on the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, questioning his suitability for the position, “the existence of endless external pressures and persistent hostile media campaigns” and the “imperative attention” to other personal and family duties.

“Although, like anyone who looks at its operation and trajectory objectively, I have not the slightest doubt about the straight governance of the Banking Foundation”, he assured in the letter.

In this text, he has also thanked those who “contributed to the crystallization, growth and consolidation of Unicaja, as well as the important role played by it in the development and strengthening of the Spanish financial system”.

Medel has underlined that, in his opinion, the pressures received “have placed the majority of employers in a uncomfortable personal situation, often difficult and deeply unjustified”.

“A situation that has been the consequence of being independent and consistent with a project whose fundamentals, of which they are depositories, coincide with those behind Unicaja’s trajectory and which allowed it to become, in its double financial and social projection, the only Andalusian bank, the fifth Spanish bank and the first Andalusian social foundation of a private nature”, he added.

At the beginning of the letter, he recalled his support for the approval of a report on the entity’s governance for reasons of transparency and “collaboration with the institution that exercises Protectorate about the Banking Foundation”.

The Unicaja Banking Foundation has the 30.2% of the capital from Unicaja.

The financial institution issued a statement last week rejecting the “political interference” and denying a possible change of headquarters and departure from Malaga in the face of doubts expressed about the management of Medel by some employers and other third parties such as the Government itself.
