Cat Power: Fragile folk, blues and country

Marshall’s music is minimalistic, she accompanies herself with guitar and piano, often supported by a violin, drums or other instruments. Her singing is in the tradition of Southern folk, blues and country.

She formed her band Cat Power in Atlanta, with Glen Thrasher and Mark Moore. After that she moved to New York City. In 1994, while opening for Liz Phair, she met Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth and Tim Foljahn of Two Dollar Guitar. They encouraged her to record and played on her first two albums, DEAR SIR (1995) and MYRA LEE (1996). In 1996 she got a contract with Matador, where her third album WHAT WOULD THE COMMUNITY THINK was released, which included the single for the cult hit Nude As The News can be found.

Cat Power feat. Lana DelRey

In total she has produced ten studio albums, four EPs and 23 singles. WANDERER was released in 2018, after which she worked with Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan, among others. She recorded the pre-single “Woman” from her current album COVERS together with Lana Del Rey:

COVERS was released in January 2022. On her third cover record, she reinterprets songs by The Pogues, Nick Cave and Frank Ocean, among others. ME author André Boße attested to Cat Power that she had long been both “a great songwriter and a unique interpreter. Which is because of how idiosyncratic she approaches these templates. Instead of emphasizing obvious characteristics, she plays the songs the way she wants to hear them.”
