World record at the World Championships in Athletics: After her Olympic victory, Sydney McLaughlin also won gold in the hurdles in the USA. And with an incredible time.
Olympic champion Sydney McLaughlin has won her first world title with a fabulous world record over the 400 meter hurdles. The 22-year-old American beat her old record on Friday evening (local time) by an unreal 0.73 seconds in 50.68 seconds at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene. Silver went to Femke Bol of the Netherlands in 52.27 seconds. Dalilah Muhammad of the USA took bronze with 53.13 seconds. It was the first world record at this World Cup.
“It’s unreal. All glory to God, he got me through this journey and thanks to my family and friends – it takes a whole village to get here,” said the 22-year-old, still sitting on the tartan track. “I just wanted to do it. The last 100 meters definitely hurt.”
McLaughlin gets a bonus of US$70,000 for World Championship gold and an additional US$100,000 for the world record. She has now set five of the six best times ever recorded in the 400m hurdles. Other than her, only Muhammad ran the distance under 52 seconds when she took Olympic silver behind McLaughlin in Tokyo. McLaughlin has beaten the 52-second mark five times – and three times since the beginning of June.
