Pro golfer Rory McIlroy has become the first player to win the PGA Tour season standings for a third time. The Northern Irishman won the final tournament in East Lake/Atlanta after an impressive comeback and received prize money equivalent to around 18 (!) million euros for his triumph.
“It’s great to end the season on such a high level and to have accomplished something no one has done before,” said McIlroy. It was “incredibly satisfying”.
The four-time major winner started the final round six strokes behind American Scottie Scheffler, but won after a round of 66 with a one-stroke lead over world number one and South Korean Sung-jae Im.
The Austrian Sepp Straka landed in a strong seventh place, German golfers were not at the start.
He can imagine “how Scottie feels,” said McIlroy (33). Scheffler spoke of “little mental problems” in the fourth round: “I fought, but Rory just played really well.”
