McDonald’s announces perfume with the scent of fries | Abroad

McDonald’s has developed a perfume that smells like French fries. The Japanese branch of the fast food chain reports this on its official page on X. It is not the first time that the company has pulled off such a stunt. In February 2020, McDonald’s already launched a set of candles that had the scent of all the ingredients from one of its famous hamburgers.

“We tried to make a perfume that smells like French fries. Perfect for a nice date,” the 6.7 million followers of the official McDonald’s Japan page suddenly read on X on Wednesday.

In addition, an image of a woman who allows herself to be sprayed with the new perfume. There appear to be three variants: one with the smell of classic fries, one that smells like fries with seaweed and salt and one that smells like fries with garlic, black pepper and mayonnaise. It is said to be a ‘limited edition’, but it is not clear at the moment where and when the perfume will be offered for sale.

Original box

More than 21 million people have already seen the advertisement and there is a strong response. Some think it is an early April Fool’s joke, while others are mainly interested in the original box in the shape of a chip wrapper that contains the perfume. “A smell that makes me want to eat you,” someone jokes.

If the perfume is actually released, it would not be the first time that McDonald’s has entered the fragrance market. In February 2020, the chain released a set of scented candles that smelled like the ingredients of McDonald’s ‘Quarter Pounder’: a hamburger (of 113.4 grams, a quarter of a pound) with pickle, onion, cheddar, ketchup and mustard in a sesame seed bun. You could burn the candles individually or all together for the ultimate ‘Quarter Pounder’ sensation. Even then, the marketing stunt did not go unnoticed.

Well-known YouTubers Safiya & Tyler tried out the candles. They discovered that not all ingredients smelled equally good individually, but that the combination itself “not so bad” used to be.

The release of the candles came in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the McDonald’s classic. This was also a limited edition. The candles were then sold by Golden Arches Unlimited, an online store for McDonald’s merchandise. It is not clear whether that will be the case again.
