MBO schools can apply for money for financial education from September 18 | News item

From 18 September, MBO schools can submit an application for a subsidy for financial education. Minister Carola Schouten (Poverty Policy, Participation and Pensions) previously announced that €8 million will be available for this purpose this year.

Many students become financially independent during their studies. How to deal with this responsibility appears to be a challenge in practice. For example, research by Nibud shows that more than a quarter of MBO students are faced with payment arrears or debts. Especially at school there are opportunities to discuss and learn about this. The subsidy offers schools the opportunity to respond to this.

Schools can apply for one-off financial support for a longer period (maximum 3 years). This allows them, for example, to train teachers to integrate financial education into existing subjects, hire or release employees to ensure that financial education is given a structural place at school, or organize financial guidance for students with money worries.

Applications can be made from September 18 to October 16, 2023. Registered schools will then receive the money to get started this year. In preparation for the application, online information meetings will be organized on 11, 12 and 14 September. Because the application period is short and schools are busy around the start of the school year, the application process has been made as simple as possible. Information about the procedure and conditions can be found at geldlessen.nl/subsidie. The intention is to also make the scheme available to primary and secondary education in 2024 with new money.
