Earnest money, salary & right to have a say
Kylian Mbappé (23) thanked Real Madrid for their interest after announcing his extension at Paris Saint-Germain. “I am aware of the opportunity and privilege of being wooed by such a big name,” wrote the world’s most valuable footballer in a statement. “I would like to sincerely thank Real Madrid and President Florentino Pérez.”
From a contractual point of view, it is said that the “Royal” had been in agreement for a long time before PSG was able to convince their star player. According to information from “Sky Sports”, a fee of around 120 million euros and an annual salary of around 60 million euros were required – not including performance-related bonuses for goals, the Ballon d’Or or winning the Champions League.

Mbappé also secured complete control over his image rights. According to reports, he should also have a say in transfers and the question of coaching in the future. “I can imagine their disappointment,” said Mbappé about the “royal” who got nothing. “But I’ll be her biggest fan at the Champions League final in Paris. My home.”
One might think that Mbappé used Real Madrid to get the most out of PSG. The three-year contract, which is unusually short for a 23-year-old footballer, suggests that the 2018 world champion is already planning his next move. “I would like to thank the President, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, for his trust, attention and patience. I also thought of all the PSG fans, in France and around the world, who have shown me their love countless times, especially in the last few months.”
When signing, Mbappé was probably also thinking of his training club AS Monaco, which he made an additional payment of 35 million euros with the extension in Paris. Mbappé already decided against Madrid in 2017 and for Paris as the next step, who initially loaned him out for a season to avoid problems with financial fair play. In 2018, PSG bought him for €145m and in the course of the transfer, the Monegasques secured a clause guaranteeing them another €35m if Mbappé is renewed in Paris until June 30, 2022 or sold. With a free transfer to Madrid, Monaco would have gone empty-handed. Thus, the fee increases to 180 million euros.
