Maythe (9) honors murdered mother with a cap and gives it to her idol Guus

Last Sunday, some 35,000 visitors saw how Guus Meeuwis suddenly walked around with a cap from the audience during his last Groots concert of this year. Now it turns out it wasn’t just any cap. 9-year-old Maythe made the black cap as the ultimate tribute to her mother Marly, who was killed by her ex last year. “They were going to go together for the first time this year,” says her uncle Tony.

Marly was a big fan of Guus and didn’t miss an edition of Groots met a Soft G. This year had to be extra special. For the first time she would sit in the stadium with her daughter Maythe. It didn’t get that far. Marly, 35, was shot dead by her ex last July in Kinrooi, Belgium. Her cousin, who was trying to protect her, was also killed.

Despite the drama, Maythe was in the stadium with her father last Sunday afternoon. In the run-up to the concert, the two made a special cap with the text: ‘Marly and Guus 4Ever’.

“After a few songs he was right in front of us. And sure enough, he took the cap.”

“The moment we entered the stadium, Maythe said that she really wanted to give that cap to Guus,” says Uncle Tony, who was also there. “That will be fine, we thought then. There are so many people who have brought something for him.”

So the surprise was even greater when the singer walked by early in the concert. “After a few songs he was right in front of us. And yes, he took the cap. He walked around with it for a whole song. Even on his head for a while.” Why he stopped at Maythe of all places? “That must have been a coincidence.”

A few days later, Tony realizes how special the moment was. “It feels very double. We would have preferred Marly to have been in the stadium with us. But it will be a very special memory.”

“We would love to enlarge that photo. To capture the moment forever.”

Speaking of a memory, after the concert, Tony posted a message on Facebook. In it he asks people who were also in the stadium if they happen to have a photo of Guus with the cap. “We didn’t manage to take a good picture ourselves in the rush. It would be great if someone else did. We would love to enlarge that picture and hang it up. To capture the moment forever.”

Meanwhile, a lot of photos are trickling in under the post, on which Guus walks around with the cap in question. “Even from the house photographer of the concert,” says Tony. “It’s already great. You just don’t see the text properly. Maybe someone else has made that one perfect picture.”
