Mayor Meppel: ‘Talk to each other about misconduct while going out’

Mayor Richard Korteland of Meppel asks residents to talk to each other about misconduct in the nightlife. According to the mayor, things go wrong too often in the city center of Meppel.

“The moment the terraces close and there is more alcohol in the man and woman, things go wrong too often,” Korteland said tonight at his New Year’s meeting in the Ogterop theater. “Emergency services, enforcement officers and catering staff see too much behavior that is unacceptable.”

Last year there was regular violence in the entertainment area of Meppel. The mayor also pointed out the trash-talking by the nightlife crowd. “Not normal,” he thinks.

Korteland is fed up with the fact that the government is busy enforcing and imposing sanctions. “I make an urgent appeal: talk about it with each other. With your brother, sister, child or group of friends. Together we ensure that evenings in Meppel are also pleasant evenings. I am not looking forward to imposing more city center bans .”
