The besieged southeast Ukrainian port city of Mariupol is “blocked” by Russian troops, the city’s mayor reported on Friday night.
The port city with about 450,000 inhabitants has been attacked by the Russians for days. Mariupol Mayor Vadim Bojchenko already issued a cry for help on Friday in which he urgently asked for military aid. The Russians have surrounded the city and there is an imminent shortage of food. There would also be no water, heating and electricity.
“Right now we are looking for solutions to the humanitarian problems and we are looking at all possible ways to get Mariupol out of the blockade,” Bojchenko said in a Telegram message. The mayor has asked for an escape route for his citizens, among other things.
