Mayor Hoorn cancels Hovocubo final game: “Received a report from the police”

Tonight’s final of the play-offs between the futsal clubs Hovocubo – FC Eindhoven is cancelled. This decision has been made by the mayor Jan Nieuwenburg. It is currently unclear when the match will be played. “We have concerns about public order and safety,” said a spokesman.

The run-up to this first final match was already bad noisy. Hovocubo played in the semi-final (best-of-three) against Tigers Roermond. In the all-deciding third game, Hovocubo led 2-0, but with five minutes to go the flames hit the pan.

“We received a report from the police that it was wise to cancel this match”

There were riots between players and supporters of both teams and because of this the police was fully present in sports hall De Opgang. The cancellation is therefore related to the events of last Sunday. “We received a report from the police that it was wise to cancel this match,” said the spokesman for the municipality of Hoorn.

A police spokesman declined to say what the threat was exactly. “We received a threat towards the game and passed it on to the municipality, which has entered into discussions with the parties involved.”

Hovocubo does not want to comment on the decision of the municipality.

After last Sunday’s strike, the KNVB decided that the suspended match should be made up on Wednesday. This had to happen on the KNVB campus in Zeist without an audience. Tigers Roermond is not pleased with the course of events and opted out of the competition. As a result, Hovocubo was designated the winner and will face FC Eindhoven in the final.

It is not yet known when the match will be made up. The KNVB says that they are in consultation with both clubs.
