The 80th anniversary of the end of the war on May 8, 2025 is to be celebrated once in Berlin as a public holiday.
The Senate introduced a bill on Tuesday. As in 2020, Berliners would then have no work on the day of liberation from National Socialism. In the end, the House of Representatives has to decide on the amendment of the public holiday law.
“A peaceful coexistence of peoples is still not a matter of course. Recent history shows that wars cannot be permanently ruled out in Europe either,” said Interior Senator Iris Spranger (SPD) on the initiative. “This awareness is to be honored with a special holiday in 2025 on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe.”
The Second World War in Europe ended in 1945 with the surrender of the German Wehrmacht. On the night of May 8th, 1945, representatives of the Wehrmacht signed a corresponding document in front of the victorious powers USA, Great Britain, France and the Soviet Union in the building of today’s museum in Berlin-Karlshorst.
