Many celebrities find it important to show their social involvement. After all, the sword cuts both ways: they do something good and it also makes them better image-wise. Maxime Meiland is very opportunistic in this: during the time of Chateau Bijstand, for example, she briefly volunteered for the Babyspullen Foundation.

Sad story

After that TV series, the foundation simply never heard from Maxime again. “Maxime would be an ambassador for the foundation,” the director said recently. “No further interpretation or follow-up has been given to this. She had a collection container from us for a short time. The activities that went with it turned out not to be appropriate, so that was stopped quite quickly.”

Her romantic partner Leroy was furious about the criticism and spoke up two weeks ago Show news of a ‘sad story’. “You should know how much stuff we donate or give away.”

Charter Maxime

She does not work selflessly for the Babyspullen Foundation, but she does draw attention to Stoptober. An important difference: she does get paid for that. And that’s strange: Stoptober is an initiative of several charities such as KWF and the Heart Foundation to get people to stop smoking. They live on donations.

Part of those donations are now used to charter Maxime. To pay her to stop smoking, in the hope that other people in the Netherlands will also stop smoking. Strange, say critics: you do something like that because you really think it’s important and not because you can cash in with it?

‘A little crazy’

Wilfred Genee is critical of it. He agrees Today Inside: “I understood about the Meilandjes: they smoke like heretics all the time, they throw through three packs a day and Maxime is now participating in Stoptober. I don’t know what you think, but she even gets money for that, which I think is pretty crazy if you want to do it for a higher purpose.”

Albert Verlinde: “Yes.”

Johan Derksen: “Well, I don’t participate in it.”

Albert: “No, I saw that when I came in, hahaha.”

Smoking all day

Wilfred finds it strange that all those butts are not shown on SBS 6. “Those people are smoking all day, but they are not allowed in them. It’s not allowed in the soap. You’re just smoking and you’re not making a fuss about it, are you?”

Johan: “No, not at all. If they want to film me…”

Wilfred: “What is ‘real life’ about cutting all kinds of things out?”
