Máxima back in Argentina
While Amalia is preparing for her upcoming academic year in Amsterdam and Alexia is busy with the last stretch of her first year at Atlantic College in Wales, Ariane and her mother took a plane to Argentina. Not only to celebrate Pentecost together, but also to remember the anniversary of Inés’ death four years ago.
Ines
Inés was plagued in her life by depression, anorexia and delusions. In 2012, she was admitted to a psychiatric clinic for a while. Her family was very concerned. It was difficult for Máxima that there was so much physical distance between her and her sister. The two regularly traveled up and down between Argentina and the Netherlands to see each other.
After Inés’ death, Máxima withdrew from the spotlight for a while. When she returned to work, she spoke emotionally but strongly of her great loss. “My little, sweet, gifted sister Inés was ill. She could not find joy and she could not heal. Our only consolation is that she has finally found peace.”
Mind Us
Partly due to the death of her sister, Máxima has recently become honorary chairman for the Mind Us foundation, which ensures that the mental problems of young people in the Netherlands receive the right attention. Máxima grants all children in the Netherlands “resilience, self-knowledge and the opportunity to talk about the things that bother them”, she said.
“Amalia and Alexia have both spoken to people. I immediately said: it’s very nice to talk to someone and just say it, it’s not an issue. We all have moments. If we find help in those moments, why not? Then you have to use it.”
Back in the Netherlands
After a short family visit in Argentina, Máxima is once again setting foot on Dutch soil. A working visit is scheduled for today: Máxima, as honorary chairman of SchuldenlabNL, will give the closing speech at the Pact II meeting towards a Debt Care Free Netherlands at ING’s head office.
