Max Verstappen under fire in talk show: ‘He must drive electrically!’

It has been a wonderful week for Max Verstappen: not only did he receive a ribbon, he also starts as a favorite at his home race in Zandvoort. However, not everyone cheers with him.

Max Verstappen was hoisted on the shield last night in the talk show Khalid & Sophie. “Perhaps not everyone agrees with this, but it is of course fantastic that we are on the eve of a fantastic event. 300 to 400 thousand people! The Netherlands simply enjoys this,” said former Telegraaf boss Sjuul Paradijs.

‘Max needs electric!’

As Dutch people, we should be proud of a sportsman like Max, says Sjuul. “The man can win and become world champion. We should be proud of that.”

One lady at the table, however, had absolutely no desire to celebrate: presenter Carolien Borgers. When asked if she has a thing for Max, she answered snippy: “Yeah, well, not very much. I hope they start driving electric cars soon. That would help.”

Environmentally polluting

Max and his racing colleagues are very polluting, says Carolien. She also finds it ridiculous that hoteliers are profiting from the popularity of the race festival. “Like many people, I am amazed at the enormous prices that are now being charged for rooms, hotels and garages.”

Sjuul is getting a bit tired of nagging types like Carolien. “We should absolutely not complain about this, because there are so many organizations that have already filed lawsuits against the organizer and so many people have environmental problems. It’s just three days of fun, right?”

Unique sportsman

Humberto Tan had nothing but praise for Max. “I was there yesterday, I’ll be there Saturday, Sunday. We pay attention to it on Saturday evening. I think Formula 1 is great.”

He concludes: “Max is a unique sportsman. He is one of the sports icons of the past hundred years in the Netherlands. He is such a unique talent and such an ambassador of the Netherlands.”
