Maturity 2023: how prepared are the students?

cwe are almost. On 21 June, at 8.30, the final exams begin. There will be 536,000 candidates, who will arrive at the appointment with a very varied base of preparation. It shows us Openpolis, which reworked the data from the Invalsi tests supported by the fifth classes in 2022 (the 2023 data is yet to arrive). These are very important numbers because they help to understand how much and whether today’s kids will be ready to face tomorrow’s challenges competently.

Meanwhile, it must be said that this year the final exam is back in its traditional form pre-pandemic: the first test is that of Italian, with 7 tracks available. The next day, the second proof varies by address, but goes back to being national (in 2022 it was decided by the individual commissions). Then there will be the interview, and the only exception is that the performance of the PCTO, or the former school-work alternation, is not considered a requirement for admission.

The first interesting fact is that high school students in 2022 reached in 52% of cases an adequate level of skills in Italian. Unfortunately, the percentage is down compared to pre-Covid: in 2019, in fact, young people with adequate skills were 64%.

But there are stark inequalities. The first is family origin. Boys and girls with families of a medium-high socio-economic-cultural level achieve an average score of 202.6 in Italian. Those with disadvantaged families reach only 171. Not surprisingly, these numbers are not so different from those that reveal differences in results depending on the field of study: those who attend a high school reach a score of 207.5who goes in a professional only 153. In the middle, the technicians.

Territorial disparities are also strong. If on average 48% do not achieve adequate skills in Italian, in Calabria and Campania this inadequacy reaches 65%. The lowest score is that of the students of Enna and Crotone, where 40% stop at the minimum level of skills in Italian.
