The Story goes big this week with a photo of Matthijs van Nieuwkerk and the victim of his misconduct Jelleke van Rijkind. But why did they leave it on the shelf for six months?
It is big news thanks to Angela de Jong: the repair talks that Matthijs van Nieuwkerk is having with the victims of his misconduct at De Wereld Draait Door. Isn’t all this a bit late, Angela wonders. After all: is it not very obvious because of the timing that he is purely concerned about his TV comeback?
Matthew on the cover
According to the Story, Angela is mistaken. “Contrary to what Angela suggests, Matthijs entered into conversation with (a) former employee(s) in the deepest secrecy and fairly quickly after the report in de Volkskrant and his remorse does not seem to be feigned to make a TV comeback .”
The magazine continues in the latest edition: “Because three weeks after publication, Story already photographed him with his former DWDD make-up artist Jelleke van Rijkind in the Amstelpark in Amsterdam-Buitenveldert.”
Old news?
That photo of Matthijs and Jelleke, taken on Friday 9 December by paparazzo Edwin Smulders, is featured prominently on the cover of Story this week. But isn’t it a bit strange that the magazine accuses Angela of bringing old news, while they themselves have left that photo on the shelf for half a year (!)?
The Story could have had the first of those repair talks six months ago. Why didn’t they do anything with these photos then? “They didn’t know who the lady was,” reveals Bart Ettekoven in Show news.
Mega blunder
Oops, that is a mega blunder from the Story. Jelleke had given a major interview to Beau van Erven Dorens only two weeks before. As one of the few victims of Matthijs, she dared to come forward with name, surname and face. But they apparently missed that with the Story.
Because of that blunder, Story missed out on a huge scoop. “Isn’t that crazy? That lady was already in the media for a long time,” says top photographer William Rutten.
Bart: “The editors of Story probably didn’t know what this lady looked like.”
Amorous tension
Bram Moszkowicz finds it strange. “Why were those photos taken at that time? If you don’t know who that is?”
Bart can understand that. “Well, Matthijs van Nieuwkerk is of course a well-known person, so photographer Edwin Smulders spotted him and started taking pictures. Not knowing who the lady next door was. The editors say that the photos showed that there was no amorous tension between the two.”
So the Story had only paid attention to that. “Otherwise they would of course have immediately brought it up as a possible new girlfriend. Well, that was out of the question. And if you don’t know who it is, it might be someone who doesn’t want publicity at all. They have now done one and one is two and found out that it is this make-up artist.”
