Actor For Matthew Perry, 53, was given a two percent chance of survival in 2018. At the time, the actor had been addicted to opioids, i.e. strong painkillers, which had fatally damaged his colon.
To be published on November 1st Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing – in the book Perry talks about his addictions. In an interview already given in advance to People magazine, the actor sheds light on the problems that have resulted from drug and alcohol addiction.
Perry openly says that he was very close to death a few years ago. He was 49 years old at the time.
Doctors gave Perry only a two percent chance of survival because the opioids had damaged his colon so severely. The actor fought for his life for weeks, and he was in a coma for two weeks.
– The doctors told my family that I have a two percent chance of surviving, Perry tells People.
Perry says that his vital functions were maintained with an ECMO machine, which mechanically oxygenates the blood outside the body.
– No one survives it, Perry states.
But he survived. At that time, Perry underwent an operation, from which he eventually recovered in the hospital for five months. Because of the operation, he had a stoma for nine months.
Currently, Perry says that he works to be a peer support for other people suffering from addictions. He has stopped recently to think about the time he was on ECMO.
– Five people were connected to the device that night, four of whom died. I survived. The big question is why? Why me? There must be a reason for that.
