Julian Nagelsmann was introduced as the new national coach of the German national football team in September, but has only signed a valid contract with the DFB until after the European Championships next summer. How things will continue in our own country after the European Championships is currently still completely open. Record national player Lothar Matthäus has now named one of his favorites should Nagelsmann be finished as national coach again after the home European Championships.
The world footballer from 1990 made it clear to “Bild” that, in his opinion, Nagelsmann’s current assistant Sandro Wagner also had what it takes to coach the senior national team.
“The question is: Who is free and ready after Julian Nagelsmann? I would keep every option open! Sandro Wagner is self-confident. Wherever he worked – whether in Unterhaching or on TV – he did his job very well,” he said 62-year-old quoted by the newspaper.
Wagner is currently working as one of the assistant coaches under Julian Nagelsmann and has played eight international matches for Germany in his playing career (five goals).
Matthäus believes Wagner can take on “big tasks”.
Matthäus continued: “He knows the business. But of course it would be a risk because Sandro Wagner has little experience as a head coach. He also doesn’t have a coaching license. On the other hand, I trust him to do a lot and also big tasks.”
After ending his career as a player in 2020, Sandro Wagner quickly moved to the coaching bench, initially coaching the A-youth team at the Unterhaching game association, and then, until the summer of 2023, the first team that achieved promotion to the 3rd league.
Wagner also worked as a respected TV expert for various broadcasters until he became assistant coach of the senior national team.
