Marcel Sabitzer arrived in Dortmund on Monday to complete his transfer from FC Bayern to BVB. Germany’s record national player Lothar Matthäus is quite impressed by the deal.
“I think Marcel Sabitzer’s forthcoming move is a sensible solution for the player, FC Bayern and Borussia Dortmund,” wrote the 62-year-old in his “Sky” column.
In the afternoon, the Austrian was already sighted at the medical check, as a possible transfer almost 20 million euros plus bonuses are traded.
“BVB have lost Bellingham, Guerreiro and Dahoud and so far only brought in Felix Nmecha for midfield, but they have to improve there. With Marco Reus, you don’t know how he will get through the season. Sabitzer is a one-to-one replacement for Bellingham,” analyzed Matthäus.
Matthäus believes in further BVB transfers
The experienced midfielder, who still had a contract at Säbener Straße until 2025, had already been loaned out to Manchester United in the last back series due to the enormous competition in his favorite position.
“I don’t want to say that Dortmund are weakening Bayern with Sabitzer’s transfer, but they are bringing in a player who would have had more playing time in Munich if there was less competition,” said Matthäus, who added: “He was a leader in Leipzig and in Austria’s national team, he recently showed in Manchester that he can play at a high level and regained his self-confidence.”
It is unclear whether BVB has completed its personnel planning for the midfield. In any case, a million or two from the Bellingham sale to Real Madrid would still be available.
“I’m sure if Dortmund see reinforcements somewhere, they’ll try to strike again,” emphasized Matthäus.
