The German record champions are in a deep crisis. Lothar Matthäus also sees a reason for this in the club’s management team.
Record national player Lothar Matthäus misses the football competence in the club management in the current sporting misery of FC Bayern Munich. The 62-year-old wrote in his Sky column that there are very successful people from finance in the management team. “They are right there, but next to them I lack the sporting skills. Which of them won championships as players?” asked Matthäus. And further: “There is no one there who brings the smell of the stable with them.”
If the team played poorly during his playing days, Franz Beckenbauer, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge or Uli Hoeneß would have woken up the players. But who does that today, asked Matthew. He advocated involving former players such as Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Arjen Robben. “If I want, I’ll approach these strong personalities at FC Bayern and find a position for them,” said the 1990 world champion.
Eberl “not a Bayern face”
In this regard, Matthäus warned not to have too high expectations of Max Eberl, who will probably become Bayern’s new sports director from March. “With Max comes someone who has already done an excellent job as the person responsible for sports in the Bundesliga. He has a past with the club, but he alone is not a savior and he is not the face of Bayern either,” said the TV expert.
In Matthäus’ opinion, Thomas Müller would be a suitable candidate. “A Thomas Müller is intelligent, articulate, he has a lot of sympathy,” he explained his idea. He knows that the 34-year-old wants to continue playing, “and I don’t want to put him in that position,” but Bayern Munich has always lived from history.
In the emerging discussion about coach Thomas Tuchel, Matthäus expects a clearer commitment from the Bayern leadership – CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen only emphasized after the 2:3 at VfL Bochum that Tuchel would also be on the bench in the upcoming top game against RB Leipzig will sit.
“I think you have to make clear decisions,” says Matthäus. “If you support Thomas Tuchel, then you shouldn’t make your future dependent on the next game against Leipzig, but rather say that you’ll follow the path with him until the end of the season. No matter what happens.”
