In the final phase of the 3-0 win at FC Augsburg, Borussia Dortmund had to survive a real shock: BVB veteran Mats Hummels collapsed after a collision on the pitch and had to be replaced.
In the 89th minute, Hummels got a leg from Augsburg’s Maximilian Bauer in the face after an opponent’s corner.
The 34-year-old lay dazed on the pitch until the supervisors, who were waved over by referee Tobias Welz, gave him first aid and finally led him towards the dugout.
The game was over for Hummels. Nico Schlotterbeck replaced the 2014 world champion in the final phase – and even had his feet in the game when Julian Brandt made it 3-0 (90+3).
After the final whistle, Hummels and his teammates went to the guest block to celebrate the “giant step” (quote from sports director Sebastian Kehl) with the BVB fans towards the title. One or the other Dortmunder should have worried about the vice-captain, but he looked like after a defeat in a shearweight boxing match.
BVB: Mats Hummels with “Violets” and “happy”
In the meantime, however, it is clear: Hummels is not seriously injured. “He was stapled in the eye and has a pretty violet, but he was happy and we’re sure it’s nothing that throws him off track,” said coach Edin Terzic.
And even the central defender himself found the time and leisure to speak up via Instagram. Hummels shared a selfie of himself boxing pose and captioned it, “It was worth it with 90 minutes left.”
In fact, BVB only needs one win on the last day of the game against FSV Mainz 05 at Signal Iduna Park to bag the title. Thanks to FC Bayern’s 3-1 defeat against RB Leipzig on Saturday and the success in Augsburg, the black and yellow now have it in their own hands.
