Youngster Mathys Tel has brought FC Bayern many a point this young season with late goals after coming on as a substitute. However, the Frenchman is not yet allowed to start under Thomas Tuchel. Lothar Matthäus drew a comparison with another Munich professional who had similar experiences at the beginning of his career.
In just 79 minutes of play in the Bundesliga, Mathys Tel provided FC Bayern with three goals and one assist – a top figure, especially for an 18-year-old. In the Champions League against Manchester United, the young Frenchman only needed three minutes to improve.
Nevertheless, head coach Thomas Tuchel stuck to his line of leaving Mathys Tel on the bench in the home game against VfL Bochum. He did change his system so that there was room for another central attacker alongside Harry Kane. However, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting took his place, who immediately scored the opening goal in the 7-0 win.
Matthäus: Tel’s situation at FC Bayern is reminiscent of Musiala
“Mathys Tel has to take a back seat behind the well-known players in Munich,” emphasized former Munich player Lothar Matthäus in his “Sky” column, drawing a comparison with another top player from the German record champions: “He “He’s still very young and he has to stick with it, which we also saw with Jamal Musiala, who is just a little ahead of Thomas Müller in the hierarchy when it comes to playing appearances.”
DFB star Musiala, who can now look back on 92 Bundesliga games (23 goals), made his breakthrough at FC Bayern in the 2020/21 season. Under the then coach Hansi Flick, the now 20-year-old played 26 Bundesliga games for Munich, although he was only in the starting line-up seven times. In the following season (twelve starting eleven appearances) under Julian Nagelsmann, Musiala mostly came off the bench.
Matthäus now predicted in the Tel case: “As long as Sane, Coman and Gnabry perform, it is very difficult for a Tel, but he learns in every training session and when he comes in, he is concentrated, focused, and above all his goal rate speaks for itself just for him.”
