It is not known what surgery Van der Poel has undergone. MvdP had already withdrawn from the Cyclo-cross World Championships, which will take place in Fayetteville in two weeks’ time. This is due to a knee injury.
It is currently unclear whether he has had surgery for this or for his back problems. Van der Poel has also been struggling with back problems since June.
Remedy
Van der Poel took ‘temporary rest’ with a view to the road season. The team has not yet commented on the time when he will ride his first race.
“I can’t say much about it, it’s no different,” Van der Poel said earlier the Telegraph. “Because of that back pain, I have not been able to achieve my desired level since the Tour and I just want to get rid of that.
