First against last and yet Wolfsburg struggled for a long time. In the end, however, the women’s soccer team won against Turbine Potsdam, as was fitting.
The VfL Wolfsburg footballers confidently defended their lead in the Bundesliga. On Friday evening (March 17th, 2023), the German champions beat the bottom of the table Turbine Potsdam 5-0 (1-0) and in the last game before the Champions League duel with Paris Saint-Germain and the top Bundesliga game against Bayern Munich initially extended his lead over pursuer Bayern Munich to five points.
At the Allerpark stadium in Wolfsburg, the hosts started up front without their regulars Alexandra Popp and Ewa Pajor, and midfielder Jule Brand also remained on the bench for the time being. In the meantime, that did little to change the superiority of the German champions. The VfL women had more ball possession, put more pressure on goal and played with more variety, but initially failed to convert their chances successfully.
The reason for this was not least the committed defense of the Potsdam team, who played without any changes in the starting lineup compared to the previous Bundesliga game at MSV Duisburg (0:3). However, they were unable to prevent ex-Turbine’s Felicitas Rauch from conceding a header with a header after 27 minutes.
Without Teninsoun Sissoko (31st) and Pauline Deutsch (66th), who were replaced due to injury, the Brandenburg team had to accept the 0:2 through Lena Lattwein in the 67th minute, before Dominique Janssen (86th) and Popp (, who came in the second round) 72./90.+1) scored for Wolfsburg.
With just one point from 14 games, Potsdam remains a long way behind at the bottom of the table. On Saturday (1 p.m. in the live stream on sportschau.de), Bayern Munich have the chance to get closer to VfL at 1. FC Köln.
