FC St. Pauli and Düsseldorf, who are fourth in the table against fifth place with the same number of points, drew 0-0 in a hard-fought duel on Saturday evening. In the promotion race of the second division, the result brings neither of the two further.

Instead, Hamburger SV has the chance on Sunday at 1.30 p.m. at Jahn Regensburg to consolidate the relegation place three and increase the lead to six points two games before the end.

“HSV has to top it up tomorrow”, said St. Pauli coach Fabian Hürzeler of the sports show. “You can say that we have caught up a point on them, there are only three points left. See everything positively, in Regensburg you have to win first.”

Hürzeler and Thioune praise achievements

He also commented favorably on the performance of his team. “In the first half we played great football with chances to score, including top-class players. In the second half it got tougher, man against man across the whole pitch. I’m dissatisfied with the result, I can live with the performance.”

Düsseldorf’s coach Daniel Thioune was not dissatisfied either. “It’s a bit of a shame that neither team has managed to keep the league exciting. But disappointment would be misplaced as everyone tried to win this game over.”

Marcel Hartelt hits the crossbar

The top game of the 32nd second division match day did not meet expectations, especially at first. St. Pauli started more courageously and gained an overweight. However, the big chances didn’t materialize – until Marcel Hartel put the ball on the crossbar in injury time in the first half.

Dusseldorf appeared without ideas for a long time, and standard situations also posed little danger. But then the guests were suddenly very close to taking the lead: Jona Niemiec fired in the 68th minute immediately after being substituted on, and the home-grown player’s shot was deflected off the crossbar.

St. Pauli opens against Kiel

At the start of the 33rd matchday, FC St. Pauli is a guest at Holstein Kiel (Friday, May 19th, 2023 at 6.30 p.m.). Düsseldorf plays Hannover 96 at home two days later (1:30 p.m.).
