After the attack on Israel, Jewish clubs in Berlin stopped sporting activities due to security concerns. The Frankfurt President of Makkabi Germany, Alon Meyer, is stunned.

The leadership of the Makkabi Germany Association sees the negative effects of the violence in the Middle East on sports in this country as a bitter setback for society as a whole. “Ultimately, if we are honest, this is an absolute defeat for Germany, an absolute defeat of our democratic system of values,” said Makkabi President Alon Meyer to the FAZ.

Makkabi Frankfurt drives Security apparatus high

With his statement, the Frankfurter refers to the stopped sports activities of the Jewish clubs in Berlin: “The fact that we can no longer maintain safe games and training operations at a Jewish club due to an escalation in the Middle East is an absolute defeat for all of us.”

Makkabi Frankfurt, of which Meyer is also president, also had the security situation reassessed after the attack on Israel. “Of course we have ramped up the security apparatus, but the games and training sessions can continue,” the president was able to give at least a partial all-clear.

Tough political action required

Meyer is calling on politicians to take tough action against those supporting the attack on Israel. “The fact that we don’t continue to support these organizations, institutions and associations that have nothing better to do than celebrate these inhumanities with taxpayers’ money,” said the Maccabi President:

“That we do not allow demonstrations and rallies to be held here that propagate the destruction of the state of Israel and hatred of Jews in general, but rather punish them with all the severity of our constitutional state in order to vehemently defend freedom and the democratic system of values.”

Convocation hits clubs

According to Meyer, the call-up of reservists from the Israeli army also affects Jewish clubs in Germany: “I know of a lot of club members who have to fly back to Israel, including those who have just finished their military service in Israel and are now returning.”
