Carlos Alcaraz won the Masters in Cincinnati. The game against Jannik Sinner did not become the expected showdown of the best tennis players in the world.

The number one in the world rankings had to give up the final duel against its greatest competitor after only 22 minutes. At the stand of 0: 5 (Alcaraz had already succeeded in three breaks) in the first set Sinner called the physio at hot temperatures in Ohio, with damp eyes the world rankings explained that he felt “Just too bad”. On the square, he had previously made a partially hair -raising mistake and worked weakly.

Alcaraz and Sinner apologize

Alcaraz comforted Sinner after his task. Instead of the mandatory signature, he wrote on the TV camera “Sorry Jannik” With a grieving smiley. “I am very sad to have to disappoint you. I felt bad since yesterday. I thought it would be better overnight. But it got worse”said Sinner apologetically towards the audience. He had triumphed in Cincinnati last year.

Alcaraz emphasized that this was “Not the way I want to win”. The Spaniard built his opponents with warm words: “I understand how you feel. You are a real champion. You will come back more.”

Five weeks after the lost Wimbledon final, Alcaraz still successfully revenge, while the constitution of Sinner, on the other hand, ranks a few days before the start of the US Open in New York (from August 24). For Alcaraz, who defeated Sinner in five sets in an epic French Open final at the beginning of June, it is the 22nd title on the professional tour.

Both players should play again on Tuesday in mixed

Hartplatz specialist Sinner starts as defending champion at the US Open – and should be back on the pitch on Tuesday. The South Tyrolean is registered for the mixed competition alongside the Czech Katerina Siniakova and is said to meet Germany’s top star Alexander Zverev and his partner Belinda Bencic. A start seems unlikely given the scenes from Cincinnati. Alcaraz, who had switched off Zverev in the semi -finals, starts with the British Emma Raducanu.
