Masters champion far behind at the PGA Championship

Masters champion Jon Rahm blew away any chance of another big win in the first round of the PGA Championship.

The professional golfer from Spain came into the clubhouse at the major tournament in Rochester/New York after six bogeys and a double bogey with six strokes over par. He was level with Yannik Paul from Viernheim, one of two Germans in the tournament.

Bryson DeChambeau had taken the lead at this point. The American, who competes on the controversial LIV Tour but is eligible to play in the majors, ended day one at Oak Hill Country Club four under par. There were still plenty of players on their round at the time.

DeChambeau played six birdies and two bogeys, putting him ahead of world number two Scottie Scheffler (USA/-3), who can replace Rahm at the top with a win.

DeChambeau had won his only major tournament so far in 2020 at the US Open. Rahm also won the US Open (2021) and followed this up in April by triumphing at the US Masters in Augusta/Georgia.
